I have been using Ecover's powder detergent, and it works great. The whole box is cardboard, including the pour spout. I also used 7th Gen and didn't like it at all... Ecover is MUCH better. Seems to work just as well as all the mainstream stuff.

I know you had mixed reviews on the Seventh Generation dishwashing detergent. It works well for me but I also ue a product called Lemi Shine. It works really well at getting rid of residue from my extremely hard water.

It contains no phosphates. Here is more info about it.

Have you tried Ecover's tablet? I like them. They come in a cardboard box in recyclable plastic sleeves. Every so often I run the dishwasher with just a few things (this is usually when I run the dog bowls and burner plates through) and use vinegar instead - it cleans out the stuff that builds up and causes residue.

I heard someone say that they used a 1/4 cup of baking soda in their dishwasher and it works really well. I haven't tried this but plan to.
