Banana Republics New Organic Cotton Line

Gee…wherever did they get such a brilliant idea? Okay…I should be happy, no? Well…when I wrote to them a few months back they flat out said there were no plans to do this. Now they have a whole new line…a very expensive one (jeans will be a reported $250)…but it is there. As much as I would LOVE to believe I had anything to do with it…I know they just smelled a way to make a little green off the greenies. Progress…yes. My big question is why they can’t take some of these new attitudes about recycling and packaging to ALL their stores, not just their high end chain. Recycled shoe boxes in one store and millions of hangers in a dumpster in another. It is all the same company. Who are you fooling, GAP?mayor

For those of you looking to parade your fanny is something that hugs the earth as well as your butt….Salon.com has some interesting points to make on the dark side of the organic jean trend and some things to look out for.

I’m afraid to see where this new trend on green-consumerism is heading. I hate the fact that marketers are muddying up the waters. The salon article was very enlightening. Another component that is important to me is how the worker making the garment is treated. For example: are they paid a fair wage and working in good conditions?

I agree Beany. While on one hand I see it as progress, on the other I see a lot of room for manipulation of consumers’ good intent. The Salon article definitely brought up some points I had not thought about.
