Priceless

Cost of 1 pint organic strawberries $4.99
Cost of 8 organic apricots $5.99
Cost of 4 organic peaches $4.20
Cost of 4 organic bananas $3.99

Explaining to my husband how 2 little people each weighing about 30lbs can eat $20 in fruit each day….priceless.

Also priceless…people “casually” mentioning that my little family couldn’t possibly eat an entire fruit and vegetable share from our CSA. orang(Seriously…the only thing that separates my boys from orangutans is the lack of body hair. Considering their father is Italian that shan’t be a distinction for long.) Hmmmm….do you think they may be on the CSA waiting list? My shares…back off you veggie jackals!

It always amazing me how much fruit is. I ate SUPER cheap all winter on veggies (about $10 a week at the farmers market). When I added fruits to my local eating experiment this spring, all the sudden, it’s more like $30-40 a week. Yikes! Good stuff though.

BTW, I got your produce bags in the mail last week and used them at the farmers market on Saturday. Love them! Thanks!

This will be my first year with a CSA and I was wondering if it would make financial sense. It will be about $700 for a 20-week season. Does that seem right? I just don’t know… Or is going to the farmer’s market each week a better move? When you listed the fruit for $20 – it makes me think the CSA is a good move, but the weeks we get a box with nothin’ but veggies might cause my 4 boys to go on strike…

We have two CSAs here and they are $900 for 30 weeks, so your $700 for 20 weeks sounds about right. I know, it sounds daunting doesn’t it. I haven’t done it yet because I hope to start growing my own and then will supplement from the farmer market. Plus our CSAs don’t have eggs so I would have to go to the market anyway. it’s a tough choice, but everyone who I know that has joined one loves it!

Our organic veggie CSA share is $530 for 26 weeks. Our quasiorganic fruit share is $155 for 16 weeks. If yours is combined than 700 for 20 weeks is a little higher, but maybe you get more goodies than we do.

Oh…I will def. have to supplement the CSA share. I’m fairly certain there are no banana or avocado plantations on LI.

Too funny! I do the farmers’ market instead of a CSA (they’re all full here!) but my boys downed $10 worth of blueberries last week in one day. Perhaps our children would get along?

Heather- Thanks! I’m glad the bags are working out for you.

The $700 is daunting, especially if we get another one of our wierd michigan summers. Last year we went from 50 degrees and freezing to 90 degrees and drought in the span of a couple weeks, so the CSAs didn’t perform as expected, so I am nervous… But, i have so many kids and a husband to feed, I need all the help I can get!

Aw, that pic of your kids is adorable! ;-)

Our CSA is cheaper, but I think CSA price also reflects the quantity of food received. We get 8 items and the whole share usually fits in one grocery bag, except during watermelon season and pumpkin season. Luckily, I work for my share so it doesn’t blow our budget.

I can imagine the fruit-devouring scenes :) We buy huge quantity of fruit and veggies from the farmers’ market. People often ask whether we are feeding an army. No, we say, the 12 pints of strawberries and the 20 pounds of peaches and 5 melons last the 4 of us about a week. I am not even exaggerating. When summer comes, we live on fruit!
