I bet if people made a stink they would take back the old bags. They are, after all, one of the very few reliable places to recycle those CFLs. I think they have tried to simplify the process of rewarding customers for using their own bags by simply lowering their own reusable bag price to 59 cents. But I would also like it if they took back your old Ikea bags or if you got a little discount for using or re-using your own bag. I think there's room for all of it. I used to justify taking plastic bags because of all the yucky little jobs they handle so easily, but when I started tracking a bit more carefully, I realized that I take home a LOT of bags besides shopping bags - bread bags, apple bags, etc. My newspapers come in a bag (2 per weekend). So if I could completely cut out grocery bags (i'm trying!), I would still have plenty of bags to take care of those yucky jobs. Do you read Crazy Aunt Purl?
